HEDGEHOGS

There are many different species of hedgehogs, but the African Pygmy (Atelerix albiventris) and the european species (Erinaceus europaeus), are the most common types kept as a pets.  Hedgehogs belong to the Insectivora order although they also have a dietary requirement for vegetation. Nocturnal and hibernators by nature, in the wild they spend much of their time sleeping.  These unique little creatures are dorsally covered in non-barbed spines. When content these spines lie flat along the back, but when threatened they will stand on end as the animal balls up.  Legs, belly and face have a sparse covering of hair.  Beneath the skin is a loose layer of fat, which in turn overlies the orbicular muscle.  This muscle acts as a purse string and allows the animals to curl into their characteristic balls.  Sexing is very simple. Male hedgehogs have a visible prepuce on the mid-abdomen, the testicles are located in the abdomen or inguinal canal. The external genitalea of females are located just below the anus.
