Nutrition for Birds
Thankfully, the idea that seeds are a balanced diet for birds is
changing. Seeds can be a one component of a healthy avian diet, however, the
problem is that seeds are addictive for birds. Even diets that mix seeds with
bits of dried fruit and veggies are often ineffective because the birds simply
discard the non-seed parts of this diet.
For birds that are seed ‘junkies’ we recommend Lafeber's Nutri-Berries as the
main staple. These “berries” are actually balls of seeds which have been hulled, with all of
the vitamins and minerals that are missing from a traditional seed diet included in the “glue”
that holds the seeds into the shape of a ball. To the Nutri-Berries diet you can add a variety
of fruits, vegetables and healthy table scraps. Most birds need to see a new food item many times
before they will consider trying it out. Try offering a new food item in the morning before the
seed staple is offered so they are hungry and motivated to try it.
A well balanced pelleted diet is the diet of choice for our birds with a
variety of fresh fruits and veggies. The best diet that we have been able to source is Harrison's Bird Foods.
